Hi, I’m Megan.

Megan McGarrity, MA, MCMH - Children, Families, Adolescents

Life is complex, especially for kids, teens, and families navigating the emotional and often overwhelming parts of growing up. You do not have to navigate it alone.

Seeking support for your child or for yourself is a brave first step toward a more aligned life. I work with children ages six and up, teens, adults, and families navigating ADHD, anxiety, anger, adoption-related experiences, and relationship challenges. Having grown up in Atlanta myself, I remember what it felt like to be a teenager here, including the academic pressure, social expectations, and constant balancing act between wanting independence and still needing support. That perspective shapes how I connect with young people in therapy.

With kids and teens, my focus is on helping them feel their feelings without being controlled by them. Big emotions do not scare me. They can be confusing and powerful, and many young people do not yet have the language or tools to express what is happening inside. I like to meet clients exactly where they are and get creative in the process. Sometimes that means art, movement, games, humor, or simply slowing things down to build insight. Before joining Atlanta Counseling Collective, I worked at Art It Out, where I developed a deep appreciation for expressive, flexible therapy that does not require a child to sit still and talk for fifty minutes to make progress.

I also love supporting teens who are trying to make sense of who they are and how they fit into their world. Adolescence comes with friendships, family dynamics, school stress, and a lot of internal pressure. I enjoy helping teens build emotional vocabulary, confidence, and coping strategies they can carry into adulthood.

When I work with families, I take a collaborative approach focused on understanding what drives behavior, improving communication, and making home feel calmer and more supportive. My approach is rooted in a human-centered, integrative framework grounded primarily in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, while also drawing from DBT, play therapy, mindfulness, and creative interventions depending on each family’s needs. Therapy should feel practical, collaborative, and authentic.

My passion for this work is deeply personal. As an adoptee who reunited with my biological family in 2020, I have seen firsthand how therapy can transform the inherent pains of the human experience into opportunities for growth. I bring my full presence, compassion, and a healthy dose of humor into our work together. My goal is to provide a safe, creative space where clients feel understood and less alone, and where real-life skills and confidence can grow.

  • Children, Adolescents, Parents and Families

I love helping young people build the skills to handle their emotions instead of being run by them. Big feelings are welcome in my office.

  • Great question, my first priority is always to assess what you need and tailor our work to that. But there are some specialties that I have (its ok if these look like a bunch of letters, we can get into it!):

DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy) and DBT for Children: Helps with big emotions, relationship struggles, and impulsive behaviors by teaching real-world skills for calming, communicating, and coping.

CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy): Focuses on noticing unhelpful thought patterns and shifting them so you can feel and act differently in everyday life.

SPACE (Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions): A parent-based program for helping anxious or OCD kids by guiding parents to respond in ways that reduce anxiety while building the child’s independence and confidence.

  • I grew up here in Atlanta and graduated from Lovett, so I know the city not just from a map, but from the lens of being a kid and a teenager trying to make sense of life here. I headed off to Auburn for college and eventually found my way back home for graduate school at Mercer. Before joining Atlanta Counseling Collective, I worked at Art It Out, supporting kids, teens, and families through the real-world challenges of anxiety, emotional regulation, friendships, school stress, and family dynamics.
